Description
You can go Strapless with the Guided Calf section! This Step-Smart variation allows the wearer to walk without straps.
The calf section of the Strapless Optional Step-Smart is 2” taller, reducing the pressure on the calf, and making it more comfortable. The medial extension replaces the I-strap by contacting the leg intermittently when the foot inverts.
We realize that depending on your daily activities, you may want a little more support from time to time. The Strapless Optional model includes an optional removable calf strap and Velcro strip, giving you the ability to customize the up and down position to suit your needs or go with no strap at all.
This design requires a shoe with an instep. The instep of the shoe can be a strap (such as a sandal) or laces. Adequate instep support is recommended to keep the heel down into the heel cup.
The Step-Smart Brace may appear “bent” or “twisted” when it’s not on the foot and ankle, but this is all part of the science of biomechanics behind this unique design.
Why may it appear to be bent? The preflexion angle is desired for preload before heel strike which is necessary to manage immediate deceleration of the foot. In addition, the angle of the calf section will provide clearance even in the dorsiflexion range of motion.
Why does it look a bit twisted? The brace accommodates the natural toe out of human ambulation. This is desired for good calf section tracking on the calf. The articulated calf section works best when it travels back and forth in the line of progression.

Bought a set of these, they are better but can be improved. The pro is no double strap and an easier on/off experience the con is that when you sit, so driving as well, the brace shifts off your calf. I use a velcro wrap to prevent that and they work near perfectly. An improvement to both braces would be a hybrid, one with medial extensions on both sides and a velcro buckle on the extension or even a strap. Since it would be riveted on and the brace back would prevent pressure from over-tightening you’d have a single strap used just to prevent lateral shift and the ease of a single strap that doesn’t move.
I’d like this design to be something you consider as I’m sure it would make a more streamlined alternative to the regular smart step and be a bit quicker and less irritating.

Thank you for your review Robert. We always welcome suggestions for improvement. We do offer a cuffed calf section which wraps on both sides of the calf and Ian is currently working on a ‘hybrid’ so your comments come at an opportune time. I will make sure he sees your recommendations.

I’m on the 3rd day of using the Strapless Step-Smart Brace and it has exceeded my expectations by 1000%. Just took a 2-mile walk and it worked like a champion when my foot inverted. I was a little worried about ordering it, but I’m glad I did! Wow, just wow!
