The Step-Smart Brace by Insightful Products

What shoes work with the Step-Smart drop foot AFO Brace?

We took a trip to Lamey Wellehan Shoes (Maine’s Oldest Shoe Store Chain) with Insightful Products owner Ian to try out the Step-Smart AFO with many shoe types.

Practitioners know that patients who feel that ankle and foot orthoses (AFOs) hinder style are likely not to be worn (leading to non-compliance). And that’s exactly why Ian, our founder, designed the Step-Smart brace to work with lots of different shoe types. There’s no real need anymore to let function trump fashion. There is no need to up-size or buy medical shoes with the Step-Smart.

The Step-Smart drop foot brace is streamlined and low profile. It can be worn with:

  • Most dress shoes (Wingtips, Dansko, Loafters, Heals)
  • Comfy shoes (Uggs)
  • Sneakers (Nike, New Balance, Adidas, Vans)
  • Some sandals  (Clarks)
  • Hiking boots (Keen, LL Bean, Merrell)
  • Beach and water shoes (Sperry Top Sider, Speedo, Body Glove, Rockin Footwear, Merrell)

There’s no need to worry about getting your brace wet either. Our AFO bracek will work fine at the beach with the proper beach shoe or sandals.

Don’t be restricted to ugly medical shoes.  Wear a shoe that fits your style.

  1. I would like to know if this brace would work in a SAS RELAXED you can see this show online at SAS SHOE’s . Al;so, can this brace be taken from one shoe to another? How much is this brace?

  2. I have a drop foot as a result of being injected by a medical doctor directly into my sciatic nerve in my left buttock. This was in 2010. I have been using the “off the shelf” swiss made hard plastic brace. This has given me an enormous amount of trouble, blisters on my Archilles tendon caused by the friction, I also have to wear a bigger size shoe. Where is South Africa, Johannesburg in particular can I find an Orthoptist who could assist me in obtaining something better than what I have to wear now. Shoes present a problem too – it is very difficult to obtain a shoe comfortable enough to wear for nearly an entire day. Please help me,

    Yours faithfully,

    Carol Allan.

  3. If ordered from south africa and if it does work out with my drop foot can i request a refund?also i am a size 4 which is a u.s size 6.5 i think so would i need the small/medium?please advise thank you

    1. So sorry for the delay in replying to your question.
We do not accept returns on our international sales at this time, I am sorry to say.
The cost of shipping and import/ export tariffs and fees make that prohibitive at this time.

Forgive my misunderstanding, but he size you are referring to, 6.5, is that a man’s size or a woman’s size shoe?

  4. Hello . I’ve been diagnosed with Charcot Marie Thooth since I was 13,I am 17 now and I want to ask you If this brace is good for me , I have got that foot drop and I feel so ashamed of myself when I walk and when I want to wear something casul , elegant I can’t because I need to wear sport shoes as my old brace to fit in(can you wear a casual shoe and people still cannot see it ?) I live in UK but I don’t think the shipping would be a problem . I am looking forward for your reply .

      Hi Vince

See the attached video about someone else in a similar position.
I am not familiar enough with your particular case to know if the Step Smart brace will be exactly what you need but I can tell you it is much smaller and lighter than many braces prescribed for drop foot.
Any brace is another thing in your shoe so it will take up some space- but people say our brace works in a greater variety of shoes for them.

      Andy

    1. Good catch. The design of this brace moves the bulk out of the shoe and to the back of the brace.
It does not fit comfortably in anything higher than a hiking boot therefore.
